Preston Eating Out guide

With a student-centered city centre, Preston is the perfect place to grab a nice bite to eat on a budget. Apart from The Source at the UClan Union and student favourite The Adelphi nearby check out our guide to some of the most student-friendly eateries without the long walk.

Bella Emilio's, Friargate

Bella Emilio's is a great Italian restaurant at the bottom of Friargate, near Greyfriars. It is an intimate restaurant with good quality food. They have a great deal Mon-Thurs for a starter, main and half bottle of wine for just £10pp.

The Black Bull, Fulwood

The Black Bull offers a friendly pub atmosphere with a great menu including a Grill Night on Tuesdays and a Curry Night on Thursdays. Both mean you can get a great tasty meal and a pint for just under £6, which should fill you up nicely. They also have a great range of real ales, nice log fires and everything you’d need for a fun night out afterwards. Popular with students in the area, the Black Bull is one of the best modern pubs in the city.

The Olive Press on Winkley Square

is a great place to go if you’re on a first date or fancy a slightly posher meal than usual. You can get a gorgeous pizza and some nicely filling pasta for around £8-9 but the real draw has to be a Monday evening where at the moment prices drop by 50% on all pizzas and pasta - so you can treat your date without needing the overdraft. Also it’s a great place to get family to treat you to when they pop up for the odd weekend if you want to impress them with your culinary knowledge too.

The Guild, Fylde Road

The Guild is a popular student pub near to the Uni which features all the comforts of a typical Sky-showing hangout. With great food deals such as a burger and a pint for under a fiver or Monday and Tuesday steak night for just £4 you can’t argue. Although the best of the bunch has to be the £6.99 fish and chips deal for two on a Friday night – the perfect way to finish the week and start the weekend. Recommended.

Greyfriars, Friargate

Greyfriars might be a typical Wetherspoons pub but at least you know exactly what you’re going to get. Student-friendly and popular in the city, you can get all the usual drinks and meal deals in a large, comfortable pub with the town centre only a few steps away. A great place to start a night out either in town or checking out the great traditional ale pubs on Friargate as you walk back to Uni.

Cattle Market, Fulwood

The Cattle Market, just off Blackpool road is a hidden gem in the Plungington area. Great food, really cheap (especially the hot pot) and a cracking quiz on a Wednesday night make this a brilliant place to grab a bite mid-week.

Buffet at Preston

Finally, the Chinese Buffet, Friargate should certainly appease the biggest student appetite. Head there for the terrific lunch deal (£5.30 with a student discount) and fill up with lots of small portions (they charge if you leave too much on the plate) to keep you full throughout the day or lounge around on a Sunday where you can eat for just £6.75 any time in a great student-friendly restaurant.

Duk + Pond, Town Centre

Two separate restaurants of the same chain which serves great quality tapas. Prices can be quite high for certain dishes but they do have some good afternoon and earlybird deals. Duk is housed in a beautifully restored basement on Lancaster Road and Pond is just down the road from Duk, on Canon Street. It is perfect for larger events – while keeping that homely feel. Booking is recommended at peak times.
