Dead Sea Apes are one of Manchester's finest psychedelic exports, exploring the spacious realms of drone, psychedelic and avant rock. Ahead of them supporting the mighty Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO at Band on the Wall on Tuesday 20th October, we spoke with Nick, Chris and Brett to hear about some of their current favourite tracks, and compile a mean playlist, which you can Listen to here.
Nick:
Ministry - Thieves
I wanted to put Autechre Second Bad Vibel, but it's 10 minutes long, so I decided on a track from my youth. I Was really into that whole Wax Trax stuff, before moving into the European industrial scene of Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Neubauten etc. This track is great, especially with Bill Reiflin's drumming.
Polvo - Tragic Carpet Ride
Great guitar. Great arrangement.
Chris:
Can - Don't Turn The Light On, Leave Me Alone
All three of us are big Can fans. While not trying to copy their sound, we're inspired by their creativity and working methods, composing through group improvisation and recording. This is one of the first tracks they recorded with Damo Suzuki in 1970, and we were lucky enough to play with Damo in 2010.
Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention - The Orange Country Lumber Truck
The classic Mothers Of Invention line-up, live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968. An early example both of Zappa's intricate part-writing and guitar freak-out.
Brett:
Funkadelic - I Wanna Know If Its Good To You (instrumental)
I am a major Funkadelic fan (especially their first 3-4 albums). I especially love this version of the track, as it starts halfway through the original version but blossoms out into a full on wig out. I especially love Eddie Hazel's blown out guitar playing, Bernie Worrell's crunchy electric piano and George Clinton's (some might say over-) liberal use of reverb and tape echo. Perfection.
Public Image Ltd - Rise (Bob Clearmountain Mix)
Although this song is not taken from PiL's critically acclaimed early period (of which I am also a big fan of too), Rise is one of my favourite songs of theirs. In fact, it is one of my favourite songs ever. I will be very upset if this song is not played at my funeral. I find it incredibly uplifting and inspirational.
