Harwich Redoubt Fort was built between 1808 and 1810. Local legend says French prisoners of war helped construct the Fort to protect Harwich in case of invasion by Napoleon. It has a dry moat and 8ft thick walls, with 18 rooms for stores, ammunition and quarters for 300 men. The Redoubt was briefly taken back into military service in World War Two and served as a detention centre for British troops awaiting trial. Graffiti left by the soldiers can still be seen in some of the rooms. One of the most common apparitions to be witnessed is a soldier who was decapitated when a canon cable snapped. He is seen carrying his severed head under his arm. Visitors at the Fort say they have felt ghostly hands in the lower casemates. Throughout the Fort there have been a number of unexplained happenings including mysterious noises and footsteps. Eerie whistling has been heard and a woman?s voice echoes through the rooms.
