Riva Starr 'Definition Of Sound' review

Riva Starr is a consistently brilliant producer. From his work with the likes of Fatboy Slim and DJ Sneak, to his stints on underground imprints like Dirtybird and Hot Creations. Now his third album Definition of Sound on Cajmere's Cajual label reiterates his powerful positioning in the scene. 

The album is full-frontal from the get-go as it opens with the growling bassline of ‘In The Midnight Hour’, featuring the diva-esque vocals from Chicago based singer, Dajae. It’s has a similar anthemic feel to Secondcity and Tyler Rowe’s 2013 bass-y hit ‘I Enter’.

Green Velvet aka Cajmere jumps on the thumping track ‘You're Beating’ along with input from Gene Farris on ‘After Dark’. Both tracks destined for clubs, ultimate examples of heavy floorfillers.

Riva not only manages to create some strong deep house mixes, but also pays homage to the era he grew up in. ‘Can You Feel the Sunshine’ and ‘Acid Train’ with the genre's don DJ Pierre both contain strong nineties influences with infectious piano riffs as well as those jittery synths.

The 11 track album is less of a definitive masterpiece and more of an impressive portfolio, allowing Riva to showcase his versatility as a DJ, mixing the old with the new. Although it's filled with crowd pleasers, it's a solid club album nonetheless.
