Review of Acid Pauli (debut Uk Live Show)
When Acid Pauli came on stage he said that he wasn't going to do much (most if not all of the 'music' was being provided by the vibraphonist), that it was all improvised and that the audience could fall asleep if they wished. I was hoping that he was joking considering I had driven more than 200 miles and paid GBP25 a ticket for my family and friends to attend. I was also really excited to see acid pauli as I love the music he produces and had never seen him play before. Unfortunately, he wasn't joking. To say the show was ambient is an insult to the genre. There was no structure, no progression, no melody, nothing that you could identify as musical. The closest we got to describing it was 'plinky plonky'. Half the audience left before the end, the other half seemed to be engrossed with their phones. That said I liked the lighting show and the venue. I am sure that his DJ sets are great but I think he needs to make a bit more effort if he wants to be considered avant garde rather than just a bit of a chancery ( polite form)
