Food Review: Baa Bar, Liverpool

The presence of Baa Bar in Liverpool has been consistent over the past twenty years, an integral part of the city’s drinking landscape from its Fleet Street home. It’s spawned numerate bars elsewhere in the city, not to mention further afield in the likes of Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham, and we sent ourselves down to the sample how the established Kitchen in the Hardman St base in Liverpool was augmenting the experience.

Situated right in the heartbeat of the Liverpool student landscape, the bar forms part of a nucleus of drinking and eating options that also includes the nearby Font, Cambridge and unions for both Liverpool University and John Moores. Understandably given that location the vibes are resolutely student friendly, and the welcoming atmosphere is supplemented by a myriad of drinks offers and a soundtrack that reflects a younger clientele.

The culinary choices are student food standards as well, burgers, pizzas, nachos as well as some eye catching desserts which give you the chance to pretty much gorge on whatever you want when you want. A quick snack before a lecture or a full on meal at the end of the day alongside some cheap drinks - it's a flexible menu and representative of a quick and easy nosh at great prices.

We opted to go all in on the food, getting our starters as a side order to compliment the food rather than pacing things. Between us a Bacon Burger, lavished with sauce and a generous portion of food, and a meat laden Calzone formed the mains, the latter the perfect option for a carnivore looking to devour a selection of meats.

They were complimented by a gigantic portion of Nachos, dripping with Guacomole, salsa, sour cream and cheese, and while it's never going to be an option that fits with any January diet manveures it certainly got lapped up by both of us eating the meal. There was a little bit left over, but this was more reflective of that old adage of eyes being bigger than our belly, with the lost chance of Chocolate brownies making the fullness even more disconcerting.

Swilling it down with bottles of Samuel Adam lager, we left feeling that Baa Bar Hardmnan St represents the chance for quick and easy food that manages to evaporate any kind of hunger bug near enough instantly. The quality was good and the price even better; we were presented with a beyond hearty meal with drinks for less than a tenner each. It's not rewriting the culinary rulebook but if you want quick and reliable pub food fodder, Baa Bar is a more than worthy choice.
