Saul Williams ? the leading artist of contemporary New York scene, poet, musician, rapper, writer and actor all in one and a crazy band fronted by Igor Krutogolov performing under the very telling name Igor Krutogolov?s Toy Orchestra are the next stars in our line-up. Their concerts will be the highlight of the last day of East of Culture ? Different Sounds.

Saul Williams is a very expressive artist, known for his masterful command of words and involvement in the current socio-political problems of the world. For the last 20 years, he has proven to be a man of many talents. His first album, the groundbreaking ?Amethyst Rock Star? released in 2001 and executive produced by Rick Rubin created a lot of commotion in the American hip hop scene. The next album, called simply ?Saul Williams?, where the artist was supported by guests, including Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Zack de la Rocha (Rage against the Machine), got excellent reviews and was very well-received by the fans. But before Williams got into music, he had already gained global fame with his poetry. In the second half of the 1990s he was a legend of poetry slams, winning many of them and becoming one of the leaders of the movement, which culminated in his role in the famous movie ?Slam? in 1998. In the following years, along with the development of his music career, he went on concert tours with, among others, Nine Inch Nails or Mars Volta and collaborated with The Fugees, Erykah Badu, De La Soul and even Allen Ginsberg. Today, Saul Williams is one of the most important and most influential voices of contemporary America. His art has reached the White House, the Sydney Opera, the Louvre and Lincoln Centre. In Lublin we will see his solo act and it will certainly be one of the defining moments of this year?s East of Culture ? Different Sounds.

On the other end, we will also hear a sensational, large, ten-piece group Toy Orchestra fronted by Igor Krutogolov. In Tel Aviv?s excellent and varied independent music scene, Krugotolov is known as a one-man-institution. The front man of such bands as Kruzenstem & Parohod or Karate Band also recorded an album with the Polish band Mitch & Mitch. His Toy Orchestra is considered the best band playing only toy versions of instruments. Mini guitars, drums, clarinets and accordions, mini pianos, rattles ? everything pretty much for use by kindergarten kids, except Toy Orchestra uses them to make real magic. On the one hand, their concerts provide incredible bursts of joy and positive energy for audiences of all ages and on the other, they are feasts for connoisseurs and fans of music because the band?s repertoire includes even such hits as Sepultura?s ?Roots? or ?Over? by Portishead.

At East of Culture ? Different Sounds (28 June ? 1 July 2018 in Lublin), we will also hear Atari Teenage Riot, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Baba Zula, Ifriqiyya Electrique, Dirtmusic, Lech Janerka, Ammar 808 and Afenginn & Bastarda. More announcements of the many acts to perform at the turn of June and July in Lublin are coming soon. Like every year, East of Culture ? Different Sounds will provide a diverse and original programme which crosses musical boundaries.

East of Culture is a cultural project integrating artists from cities in eastern Poland (Bialystok, Lublin and Rzeszow) and artists from Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia and Ukraine). It is carried out by the National Centre for Culture and the three Polish cities. The project aims at presenting and helping discover the unique aspects of each culture as well as at facilitating the sharing of artistic experiences. Over time, the festival has become a bridge connecting our Eastern partners with the broader European culture. In 2018, East of Culture takes place for the 6th time. The project has been made possible thanks to the involvement of creative groups and local governments of Eastern Poland and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
